Bhubaneswar, May 10: The Meteorological Centre here has predicted rain and thundershowers at a few places in the state in the next 24 hours, bringing cheer to the people who have been suffering under the scorching sun for the past few days.
The Met department has also warned of thunder squalls, hail and gusty surface winds of up to 70 kmph over the districts of Ganjam and Gajapati. “Light rain or thundershowers may occur at one or two places over the districts of Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Koraput and Malkangiri and the weather will remain sunny over the rest of Orissa,” said a Met bulletin.
However, eight places recorded temperatures above the 40 degree mark Sunday with Talcher being the hottest at 43.5 degree Celsius. Jharsuguda, which has recorded the season’s highest temperature of 44 degree Celsius Saturday, recorded 38.5 degree Celsius Sunday. Angul recorded 42.1 degree Celsius, Bhawanipatna 41.2, Bolangir 41, Sonepur 40.2, Sambalpur 40.1 and Keonjhar and Titilagarh 40 degree Celsius each. The Met office also recorded rainfall of 9.6 mm at Koraput and 1.7 mm at Keonjhar in the past 24 hours.
The capital and its neighbouring areas Sunday witnessed overcast weather condition with the maximum temperature remaining at 34.5 degree Celsius. The Met department has predicted cloudy skies for the city, adding rain or thundershowers may occur Monday afternoon.
