Rourkela Steel Plant records zero demurrage in January

Bhubaneswar: Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has created a record by registering zero demurrage in January 2018 by ensuring the turn round of railway wagons in input and despatch circuits within the stipulated free time.

With meticulous planning and execution, an all time best-ever average monthly turn round of wagons of 12.6 hours and lowest-ever average monthly turn round time of wagons in despatch circuit of  29.75 hours have also been recorded, an official of RSP said.

All the input raw materials of RSP are brought by railway wagons to the plant and unloaded at various unloading units. Similarly wagons are being provided by the railways for despatch of the finished products from the plant.

For this, the railways has a fixed time slot for each rake (fixed fleet of wagons) called free time, during which the wagons are to be returned to it after loading/unloading.

If the rake is returned beyond the free time, then they impose penalty on those wagons called demurrage.

By bringing down the demurrage to zero, the plant has been able to check huge cash outflow, thereby boosting the bottomline significantly, a statement said.

RSP’s CEO Ashwini Kumar has congratulated the concerned departments for the feat.

“We have made it possible because of our confidence and conviction in our own abilities and also our enthusiasm to explore new ideas,” he said.
