Bhadrak: The district Congress Monday has demanded Rs 10 lakh compensation to the next of the kin of the five school children who were killed by a speeding truck July 19 near Rahanja in the district.
They have also demanded a fly over for the safety of the people, particularly school going children.
A team of Bhadrak district Congress visited the bereaved families and expressed greif. Later, they demanded the compensation to be increased to Rs 10 lakh each.
On this occasion, Nalinikant Mohanty, district working president, who led the team, said the administration had held a meeting involving the headmasters of the schools located by the side of national highway regarding the safety of students. The move should have been taken much earlier, he observed.
The members opined that a fly overbridge in the stretch from Akhuapada to Ranital on National Highway-16 will help in controlling accidents.
The team also visited the hospital where the injured are undergoing treatment and enquired about their health.
Mohanty warned that any negligence in the treatment would not be tolerated and that the Congress would resort to protest if adequate compensation is not given to the affected families.
Municipality councilor Asraf Alli Khan, ex-sarpanch Basant Kumar Lenka, Rahanja Coopeartive Society president Jitendra Sahu, Anjan Kumar Lenka and many others were present during the visit.
