Sand trader shot at in Sundargarh

Rourkela: A sand trader was shot at by two bike-borne miscreants at Udusu village under Bisra police limits in Sundargarh district Sunday noon.

Bharat Mahato of Teterkela village sustained bullet injury on his back and was placed under treatment at the Ispat General Hospital (IGH) here.

Sources said the incident occurred when Bharat was returning home after playing football at Barsuan. The bike-borne miscreants intercepted him near Udusu square and opened fire at him. A bullet struck his back and he fell unconscious on the spot, while the assailants sped away.

Hearing the gunshot, locals rushed to the spot and informed the police who rescued Bharat from a pool of a blood and admitted him to IGH.

Police suspected that the attack was the fallout of a dispute over a sand quarry at Teterkela. A case was registered by Bisra police and a probe was initiated.

The police sealed all major checkpoints of the town and tried to trace the miscreants. “A manhunt is on and the accused will be arrested soon,” a senior police official said.
