Bhubaneswar: Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) Friday said it had received a large number of scrapped notes of `1,000 and `500 denominations since the demonetisation move by the Centre.
The scrapped notes were found in the hundis (donation boxes) of the 12th Century shrine at Puri, said Maheswar Panigrahi, Temple Administrator (Niti). The temple has received `3 lakh in old `500 and 1,000 notes during Rath Yatra festival from July 10 to 20, he added.
Stating that the scrapped currency notes are a major concern for the temple administration, Panigrahi said old notes worth over `12 lakh have so far been recovered from several donation boxes at the temple.
“We have written to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for consideration of the matter as the notes are from the donation boxes. We hope the RBI will consider the case. The old currency is in safe custody,” Panigrahi added.
The Centre November 8, 2016 had scrapped old `500 and 1,000 notes and allowed the demonetised currency notes to be deposited in banks till December 30, 2016. PNN
