Bangkok: PV Sindhu progressed to the women’s singles semifinals after knocking out Malaysia’s Soniia Cheah in straight games at the Thailand Open badminton tournament here, Friday.
The second seeded Indian continued her consistent performance with a 21-17, 21-13 win over the World No.35 in a 36-minute clash. World No.3 Sindhu will next face Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, a 21-17, 21-8 winner over Canadian Michelle Li in other last eight contest.
The drift in the hall created troubles for both shuttlers who struggled with the length of their strokes. Sindhu was erratic initially and the result was Soniia led 11-7 at the break.
After the break, Sindhu reeled off five points to lead 13-12. She continued her aggressive display to set up four game points. The Malaysian saved one, before Sindhu sealed the next one with a smash.
In the second game, it was close at 11-9 at the first break with Sindhu leading. However, Sindhu then sealed off nine points in a row and ended the contest on a comfortable note.
