Single hand effort to come up in life

Champua: Even as he had lost his left hand in childhood, the disability has never dented his spirit to do well in studies, says Sukura Munda, a Class VI student of Mahatab High School, here in Keonjhar district.

The penchant for studies makes him ride a bicycle for five km with one hand to reach his school on time every day. “I want to get a good government job after completing my education,” says the differently-abled son of Sukulal Munda of Maheswarpur village.

Sukura, second among four siblings, was stung by a venomous spider while he was catching crabs in the village in his childhood. The doctors of a local hospital wanted him to be treated at the district headquarters hospital (DHH). As his father couldn’t afford the medical expenses, he kept the boy at home. However, he had to take his son to the DHH as the wound got infected after a few days. The doctors amputated the hand to save Sukura’s life.
Since then, he has been performing his daily chores with one hand.

He demanded a bicycle from his father after learning cycling from his elder brother Laxman, said Sukura, adding he doesn’t face any problem commuting to school on bicycle, 10 km both ways.
