Sole bread-earner son dies, heart-broken mother attempts suicide

Derabish: In a heartrending incident, a woman attempted suicide, unable to bear the pain of death of her sole bread-earner son Wednesday. She was rescued and admitted to Kendrapara district hospital (DHH) where doctors said her condition remained critical.

The incident took place at Netua village under Derabish block in Kendrapara district. The deceased was Ramesh Mallick (32), son of Bidyadhar Mallick and Shantilata Mallick.

Locals said Ramesh was standing near his house. An over-speeding Tata Ace ran over him. Ramesh was rushed to the district hospital but he died there.

The bereaved family was now left in the lurch as Ramesh was taking care of his elderly parents, his wife and a three-year-old daughter. He worked as a share-cropper and took the responsibility of the whole family.
It was with much difficulty that he married off his four sisters and took care of the medical expenses of his elderly parents. The sudden death of Ramesh put additional stress on his ailing mother.

While everyone went with the body for the final rites, Shantilata tried to hang herself in the house. Luckily, some neighbours took note and rescued her. Locals sympathised with the family and demanded necessary governmental help to the family.
