Bhubaneswar, April 5: A mere 9.16 per cent of candidates taking the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) have qualified at elementary level nationally with only 17.90 per cent clearing the primary level examination, results of which were declared recently.
The examinations for in-service and aspiring teachers, which are being conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) every year, consists of papers — Paper I for teachers at the primary level (Class I to V) and Paper II for the elementary level (Class VI to VII).
Nearly 7 lakh candidates appeared for the tests that were held February 22 but only 80,187 qualified, according to the results that were declared April 1.
About 2,39,961 candidates were registered to appear for Paper I off which 2,07,522 took the test. Only 37,153 qualified. For Paper II, 5,61,709 candidates registered and 4,70,032 appeared of which only 43,034 cleared the test.
The statistics were more shocking last year when only 2.80 per cent of the candidates cleared the elementary level examination and 11.95 per cent cleared the primary level examinations.
“There is a need to remodel the teacher training programmes offered by institutions across the country. A number of teachers appointed in various schools are not eligible to remain in the posts as these results have clearly shown,” said a faculty member here.
CBSE had also displayed images of OMR answersheets along with answer keys of all candidates who had appeared in the CTET 2015 examination on its official website, in a move to bring about transparency.
