Nilagiri: The headmaster and an assistant teacher of Begunia UGUP School in Nilagiri block of Balasore district were suspended Friday after a video showing a Class IV boy chained to his bed in the school hostel went viral.
Acting on the direction of the Nilagiri Sub-Collector and the District Education Officer (DEO), Block Education Officer (BEO) Satyaranjan Bhuiyan suspended headmaster Raghunath Bugudai and assistant teacher Jatin Kumar Parida for dereliction of duty.
The order stated that both teachers would receive only 50 per cent of their salary until further instructions.
Parida has been transferred to Mitrapur Nodal School, while Bugudai has been posted at Kathapal UGUP School.
The 40-bed hostel accommodates children from nearby villages. The incident surfaced Wednesday when a video showed the boy, from Kumarakhali village, with a metal chain around his leg.
The visuals triggered public outrage after Balasore MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi alerted the District Collector, the District Welfare Officer and the Nilagiri Sub-Collector, seeking an immediate inquiry.
Following the MP’s intervention, the Balasore Collector formed a probe team and assigned the investigation to the Sub-Collector and the DEO.
Further action will be taken after the inquiry report is submitted to the district administration.
