Korei: An undertrial prisoner (UTP) allegedly died by suicide inside the Ragadi Sub-Jail in Jajpur district Friday, triggering a police investigation.
The deceased has been identified as Abinash Biswal, a resident of Nimapalli village under Kalinganagar police limits. According to reports, Biswal allegedly died by suicide inside the prison’s medical room around noon, using his shoelaces and a piece of bandage cloth.
Jail authorities rescued him and rushed him to Jajpur Road hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Korei police reached the hospital after being informed by jail authorities and launched an investigation into the incident.
Korei police station Inspector-In-Charge said the body would be handed over to the family after a post-mortem examination. Biswal had been lodged in jail in connection with a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
He was trans ferred from Jajpur District Jail to Ragadi Sub-Jail August 30. The circumstances leading to his alleged suicide remain unclear.
