Woman found dead; kin allege dowry murder

Balikuda: Family members of a woman of Padmanavpur village under Balikuda block in Jagatsinghpur district, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances, alleged of murder over dowry demands.

The deceased was identified as Mamata Parida, daughter of Gokulanand Parida.

In a written complaint with the police, they accused the husband and in-laws of torture and murder for dowry.

Acting on their complaint, police registered a case and launched a probe.

According to the case diary, Mamata, a health worker at Kanjara Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Angul was married to Biswajit Patra, son of Debendra Patra of Brahmani village.

All dowry demands were met during the marriage. However, Biswajit and his family members demanded more dowry and inflicted mental and physical torture on Mamata when she expressed inability to meet their demands.

Under pressure, Mamata’s father provided Rs 3 lakh more, but there was no end to their torture. They continued to demand more dowry.

A few days back, Mamata’s family members got a phone call stating that Mamata was ill and admitted to hospital. They rushed to the hospital only to find Mamata already dead.

Failing to get a satisfactory answer, Mamata’s father later lodged a complaint, accusing Biswajit and his family of killing his daughter in a pre-planned manner.
