Woman GRS held for misappropriation of funds

Korei: Police Monday arrested a woman Gram Rojgar Sevak (GRS) for her alleged involvement in financial irregularities and misappropriation of funds under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) at Patharpada area of Korei block in the district. The arrested GRS has been identified as Sasmita Behera.

Locals accused the woman GRS of misappropriating money released under the MGNREGA scheme. She had allegedly transferred big amounts of money to the bank account of one of her relatives.

As per a complaint filed at the Panikoili police station, she has misappropriated and duped an around Rs 13,000 from genuine beneficiaries.

After being ignored by the woman, the complainants lodged a written complaint against her. On the basis of the complaint, police launched an investigation and found her guilty. Later, she was arrested and forwarded to court.

“We repeatedly asked her to return the money. But, she had been ignoring us for the last three months. So we lodged a police complaint against her,” said a complainant.

Behera had transferred the money to the bank accounts of her husband and son. The investigation revealed mass irregularities and misappropriation of money by the Patharpada GRS, said IIC of Panikoili PS, Ajay Kumar Jena.

Meanwhile, police said a further probe is underway to find out about the irregularities.
