Woman raped, brutally killed; body dumped in pond

Bhandaripokhari: In a shocking incident, a woman was allegedly raped and subsequently killed by the rapists who tied the body to a stone and dumped it in a pond in bid to erase evidence.

The matter came to the fore after foul smell emanated from the pond. Suspecting foul play, locals alerted the police who recovered the decomposed body from the pond. The heinous incident was reported from Rebo Brahmana Sahi under this police limits in Bhadrak district.

The deceased was identified as Banita Jena (35), daughter of Dharanidhara Jena of Mobarakpur village.

Locals suspect the miscreants killed the woman after brutally raping her. They then tied a huge stone to her body and then dumped it in the pond. However, nothing was ascertained while a probe was launched.

After finding a foul smell emitting from the pond, some youths of the village gathered in the pond. Later they spotted a body in the pond and immediately informed police.

Bhandaripokhari IIC Amit Biswal, ASI Gauramani Singh and a team reached the spot and fished out the body.

Police’s preliminary investigation indicates someone tied a stone to Banita’s neck and threw into the pond after killing her somewhere else.

A case was registered and the body was sent for autopsy.

“The cause of the death will be ascertained only after post-mortem report,” a police official said. However, no family members or relatives of the deceased have lodged a complaint in this connection.

Everything will be clear after the identity of the woman is clear, IIC Biswal said.
