Tumudibandh: Police Thursday arrested a youth on the charge of kidnapping and raping a girl for days together. The girl accused him of dumping her after learning that she belonged to a different community.
Based on a complaint lodged by the victim, police registered a case and arrested the accused Sikhya Mallick (21) of Kilupada village under Baliguda police limits. He was later produced in a court.
According to sources, Mallick met the 20-year-old girl of Paditia village under Kurtungarh panchayat during a festival in Baliguda and fell in love with her.
As per the ritual of kidnapping the bride in rural areas, Mallick kidnapped the girl and kept her at his house for some days wherein he raped her. However, a few days later he came to know that the girl belonged to a different caste.
Thereupon, he decided to dump her and asked her to leave his house and not to reveal the matter to anyone.
Heartbroken, the girl returned back home and narrated her ordeal to her mother. With the help of the local ward member, the girl later lodged a police complaint against Mallick.
A probe is on, Tumudibandh IIC Baba Shankar Sharaf said.
