Youth thrashed for ‘killing’ brother-in-law

Soro: Tension gripped the premises of Soro community health centre (CHC) here in Balasore district following the death of a youth, who was attacked by his brother-in-law, while undergoing treatment Monday.

The deceased was identified as Karunakar Majhi of Maharudrapur village of Bahanaga block, while Kalia Majhi is the accused.

Accusing Kalia of killing Karunakar, the latter’s relatives thrashed him black and blue in the CHC premises. Injured severely, Kalia too had to be hospitalised later.

According to sources, Kalia and Karunakar had an altercation over some family feud Sunday noon. Losing his cool, Kalia attacked Karunakar and beat him up severely. Consequently, Karunakar sustained critical injuries.

Family members rescued him and rushed him to the CHC. However, he succumbed to the injuries while under treatment early in the morning today.

After the deceased’s in-laws called up his family and reported about his death, a group of men led by his kin reached the hospital later in the morning.

Relatives of the deceased alleged that Kalia had beat up Karunakar mercilessly. Later, they lodged a complaint with the Soro police station against the Kalia. The eight-year-old son of the deceased, who is reported to be a witness of the incident, also substantiated the murder allegation.

The minor said that his father was staying at his in-law’s house in Sunari village under Sabira panchayat for the past four years. He was badly thrashed by Kalia and father-in-law Narendra on the day of the incident over alcohol consumption and succumbed to his injuries.

However, the accused rubbished the murder allegation and claimed that Karunakar died owing to excessive liquor consumption.

Police said they are investigating into the case.
