Birmaharajpur: Incredible it may sound but the roots of paddy plants that were left in farms after harvest are growing again to produce crops. This has helped many poor families get food, a report said.
Kalapathar, a village in Ulunda block and 10 km away from here in Subarnapur district is mostly inhabited by farmers. The paddy growers of this village, for the last few years, have been raising rabi crops after getting irrigation facility from Thengo irrigation project. As most of the farmlands are in low lying areas, the farmers make bumper harvest every year. However, the development this year has brought cheer to many farmers, especially the small and marginal ones.
They suddenly spotted paddy shoots in the re-grown plants on their land even as they neither had sown seeds nor carried out any farming activities. The farmers found out that the roots of the harvested paddy plants had grown again as there was no dearth of water due to canal irrigation and produced crops, thanks to a conducive environment. Their joy knew no bounds as they didn’t have to spend a penny for the yield.
Recently, people harvested the ripe paddy from their farmlands and took them home.
Such a ‘miracle’ has happened in the land of several farmers including Ambarish Mahakud, Trilokesh Mahakur, Dasarathi Pradann and others.
These farmers had sowed some good varieties of paddy like Harjil, 1010, Silky, Annapurna, Veena, Gold and CM-13 once but are reaping for the second time from the same plants.
More than a hundred poor farmers have benefited from this ‘miracle’ of the mother earth, a farmer said.
The harvesting of the second crop is still going on as the authorities are yet to release water in the canal, it was learnt.
