BHUBANESWAR: The Abyss School of Music held its annual concert at Rabindra Mandap here Monday.
Delivering the welcome speech, co-founder of the school Niral Tirkey said, “The Abyss School of Music is the brainchild of the five members of the band The Abyss which was started in collaboration with Trinity College of Music, London, in 2009.” He detailed out the journey of the school and pointed out that the school that began with “40 students today imparts training to over 150 students”.
The occasion was graced by bass guitarist Ricardo Carlton North as the chief guest who lighted the ceremonial lamp.
In his address, North dealt with some popular misconceptions about Western music and said, “Though it (Western music) seems easy but it is as difficult as classical music of India.” Lauding praises on Abyss School of Music, he added, “The millennials have interest in Western music but are deprived of proper institutes to hone their skills. The Abyss School of Music is doing a great job by providing them proper training, grooming them, to make them ready for national and international level competitions.”
Around hundred students of the school participated in the concert. The line-up of programmes included popular classical solos like Mozart’s Turkish March on piano, symphonies like Top Gun, Pirates of the Caribbean, Scarborough Fair, Dil Diyan Gallan, Chariots of Fire, Carols of the Bells and National Anthem.
Band performances on peppy numbers like Shape of You, Love You Zindagi, Black Betty, Rock Around the Clock, I Love Rock and Roll and Dil Chahta Hai.
On this occasion, two students of the institute—Subir Digal and Adarsh Chand Jain—were felicitated by the chief guest for topping the practical and theory exams for the year 2017, respectively, of Trinity College.
It may be mentioned here that since its inception, the Abyss School of Music has been preparing students for the graded examinations of Trinity, in piano, electronic keyboard, guitar, and drums. Notably, the Trinity College of Music in London is an internationally recognised school for music, and dance training and has been ranked ninth in the world’s top 10 music schools. Abyss School became a centre for Trinity examinations in 2010, with examiners coming from Trinity, London every year to conduct examinations.
