Bangripossi: Masked miscreants killed a man by slitting his throat on the Bhubaneswar-Bangripossi superfast train Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Rajendra Behera (55) of Anlagunja village under Bangiripossi police limits in Mayurbhanj district.
Rajendra’s daughter Banita Sethy lodged a complaint with police accusing her husband Mantu Sethy (30), a resident of Baneikala village under Bisoi police limits, of murdering her father.
Police registered a case and launched a manhunt to arrest Mantu who is absconding since the incident. Preliminary investigation suggested the murder was fallout of a family dispute, police said.
According to police, Rajendra had been to visit his brother-in-law in Bhubaneswar a few days back. The incident occurred when he was returning home by the train. A group of masked miscreants attacked Rajendra and slit his throat, killing him on the spot. They then pulled the chain and escaped, co-passengers said.
Betanoti police along with Balasore GRP and Baripada GRP launched an investigation. A forensic team was also pressed. Cuttack Railway Division SDPO Sarat Kumar Mishra reached the spot and took stock of the situation.
Later, Rajendra’s son Kuber Behera identified the body. He alleged his brother-in-law was involved in the crime.
A divorce case of Banita and Mantu is sub-judice in a Baripada court.
Police seized the body and sent it for post-mortem. The matter is being investigated from all angles, Mishra said.
“We have recovered a railway ticket from the victim’s pocket and our investigation is based on circumstantial evidence,” Mishra said, adding the accused will be arrested soon.
The murder in the crowded train is a glaring example of the negligence of Government Railway Police (GRP), locals said.
GRP were earlier apprised of the movement of prostitutes and ganja trade on the train, but no steps were taken to check this, they said, adding the murder has triggered panic among passengers. PNN
