Balangir: Tension gripped the residents here after a college girl was mowed down by an over-speeding truck in Balangir district early Wednesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Milly Nayak, a Plus II student of Bolangir Autonomous College.
Sources said, the incident occurred while the girl was on her way to college by her bicycle when the overloaded truck hit her from rear. Locals rescued her in a critical condition and immediately rushed her to Balangir Medical College and hospital. However, the girl was brought declared dead upon arrival by doctors in the hospital.
Irate over the incident, college students along with the leaders of various associations and locals blocked the NH 16 by placing the dead body of the deceased.
Agitators demanded a compensation of 15 lakh for kin of the deceased. Vehicular movement came to grinding halt on Balangir-Sambalpur road due to the protest. Meanwhile, police reached the spot and tried to pacify the protesters.
