Bhubaneswar: The Appointments Committee of Union Cabinet has approved the repatriation of Intelligence Bureau Special Director and IPS of 1987-batch Sunil Kumar Bansal to his parent cadre Odisha.
Bansal will take over the charge as new Director General of Police (DGP)-Odisha from coming January 1 on a two-year term after the retirement of present incumbent Abhay on December 31 this year.
The committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued an order in this regard Sunday evening for the pre-mature repatriation of Bansal, thereby allowing a Home Ministry proposal put up earlier.
“Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of Ministry of Home Affairs for premature repatriation of Shri Sunil Kumar Bansal, IPS (OD:87), Special Director, Intelligence Bureau to his parent cadre (Government of Odisha) with immediate effect, under provision of para 6.9 of IPS Tenure Policy,” the notification read.
A circular regarding the new appointment of Bansal as Odisha Police chief was earlier issued by state Home Department December 15.
Bansal’s name was among three others sent by the government to Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for appointment as DGP in Odisha. The other two police officers were 1988-batch Manoj Chhabra who is presently posted as head of State Armed Police and 1986-batch IPS officer Pradip Kapoor who is now posted as Scientific Advisor of the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO).
Bansal had gone on a Central deputation in 1994 and since then had held many vital positions in the Intelligence Bureau, prior to moving to which, he held key posts in Dhenkanal, Angul and Mayurbhanj.
