The ethnic elegance of saris is unmatchable and women have a special fascination for their mothers’ favourite saris which they pull out of the wardrobe on special occasions
Our sense of fashion and style is largely derived from our mothers and, for most of us, mother is the first fashion icon. At least once in our life all of us are possessed with the urge to slip into mom’s shoes, try her make-up, or wear her sari in the characteristic way in which she drapes it. For women, there are few things as special as a sari inherited from mother or randomly pulled out of her wardrobe on a special occasion. Wearing it is like keeping her memories close to heart and feeling her loving presence. Don’t all women love to watch their mother with admiration meticulously draping her sari? Women share fond memories of wearing their mothers’ saris with Orissa POST.
Anupriya Mridha, a textile designer, says she is filled with a warm feeling when she puts on one of her mother’s saris. “On Saraswati Puja every year I used to wear a sari picked from my mother’s closet. I love saris and especially mom’s saris. I have inherited this passion for the sari from my mother,” she says.
“There are many emotions associated with saris but there is one that I cherish the most. I wore a Banarsi sari for my cousin’s wedding which I selected from my mother’s collection. On the wedding day I looked different from all the others not because I was wearing my mother’s sari but because it was 25 years old, one that my mother had bought when she was young,” adds Anupriya.
Lipsa Panda, an anchor by profession who lives in Bhubaneswar, is fascinated with saris. “As a child I don’t remember having ever had any great fascination for attires and accessories like the girls of my age. But saris always cast a spell on me. I remember when I was 16, I put on one of mother’s saris for the first time. That time I didn’t know how to drape the nine-yard cloth around me and my mother helped me out. I want to look my best in saris,” she says.
A public relations professional from Mumbai, Madhu Pal says every girl wants to look attractive in their mothers’ saris.
“I wore a sari for the first time at my school farewell function and my mother was very happy to see me. Seeing my sari-clad figure on stage, she started visualising me as a bride like all mothers would. Whenever I wear a sari my mother chooses the accessories that would complement my overall look. Since childhood I loved wearing my mother’s finest saris and still love to,” says Madhu.
