Narsinghpur: Forest officials recovered the decomposed carcass of a four-year-old female elephant calf from Debabhumi reserve forest under Narsinghpur forest range in Cuttack district Saturday.
Assistant conservator of forest Purnachandra Guru, forest ranger Abhiram Jena, forester Raghunath Sarangi and veterinarian Bijay Kumar Senapati rushed to the spot and recovered the carcass from Naijhar inside compartment no-12 in Debabhumi reserve forest.
Preliminary probe indicated the animal died 2-3 days ago. The pachyderm might have died either from sunstroke or in a fight with its herd members while drinking water from a nearby pond, the ranger said.
A post-mortem was conducted and the carcass was buried.
