Bargarh: A day after a woman of Bardol village here pleaded for euthanasia for her family after she failed to get financial support for treatment of her bedridden-son, the district administration has swung into action. They rescued the ailing man and admitted him to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack Tuesday .
The administration arranged a special ambulance for Munna for his transfer to the SCB. He was accompanied by his mother Prabhati, as also social workers Bikash Agarwal and Mahipal Barik.
Unmarried Muna had received critical injuries in a fall from a tree. He had been admitted first to the Bargarh district hospital and later to the VSS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla but he failed to recover. He was confined to bed after becoming paralytic from waist to toe. Prabhati sold off or mortgaged all her land including her homestead to get her son treated, but to no avail. Doctors said he could be cured if he was advanced treatment.
However, Prabhati had no money. Unable to bear with her difficult situation, she pleaded with the district administration April 30 for euthanesia.
The district collector, taking note of her plight from the reports published in Orissa Post and Dharitri May 1, provided her Rs 20,000 from the District Red Cross Fund. He also promised her that the government would bear the cost of further treatment at the SCB.
