Satamile: A female elephant was found dead in Nuakot forest under Hindol forest range of Dhenkanal district Saturday, Forest department sources said.
Members of the elephant squad, who were on duty, spotted the carcass.
The exact cause of the animal’s death has not yet been ascertained. Senior forest officials and the Hindol veterinary officer reached the spot and conducted a postmortem examination.
An investigation is underway.
Frequent jumbo deaths, apart from human fatalities and crop damage due to human-elephant conflict, have triggered growing resentment among residents of Hindol.
Locals have accused the government and the Forest Department of inaction and demanded immediate measures to address the crisis.
