Patnagarh: In a shocking incident, a girl committed suicide by consuming poison just a few minutes before her marriage Monday. She was identified as Rita Putel (22) of Kumbharkhun village under Belpada police limits in Bolangir district.
While no exact reason of the girl’s extreme step was known, the girl’s father alleged her daughter took the step due to pressure for dowry. In the last minute, the groom had called the girl’s father and demanded a motorbike. This had left the girl heart-broken who consumed pesticides kept in her house.
Family members rushed her to Patnagarh sub-divisional hospital where she succumbed during her treatment.
According to sources, Gokul Putel’s daughter Rita Putel’s marriage was fixed with Jitendra Putel, son of Tularam Putel of Bharuapali village under Belpada police limits. All the guests had arrived and all the preparations had been done.
Minutes before the groom would arrive in the village, Rita’s father got a phone call from the groom, demanding a motorbike. After having spent all the money on decorations, arrangements and buying other dowry items, the girl’s father expressed inability to meet his demands. However, the groom remained adamant and warned to return back.
Hearing the entire incident from her father, Rita was left heart-broken and took the extreme step. The incident spread outrage among locals who demanded immediate arrest of the groom.
Police registered a case of unnatural death and sent the body for post-mortem and later handed it over to family members for post-death rituals. A probe is on and action will be taken accordingly, police said.
