Bhubaneswar, April 3: Joining the rest of the world, Christians of the city observed Good Friday with traditional religious fervour. They spent the entire day in prayer to mark the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in different churches here Friday.
Also referred as Holy Friday or Black Friday, the day commemorates the suffering and death of Christ. From early morning, hundreds of devotees thronged churches for prayers while some followers observed fasts to mark the crucifixion of Christ.
St Vincent’s Catholic Church of Satyanagar conducted a prayer session ‘Way of the Cross’ early in the morning to commemorate the suffering of Jesus. Prayers in English, Hindi, Malayalam and Oriya were done and later in the evening a procession carrying the holy cross was taken out on the street from the church which covered the periphery of the church of about 200 m. There were 14 stations and in each station they knelt and recited their prayers.
Speaking of this special day, Susan Thomas said, “It is a very special day for us, as it reminds us of the pain and suffering that Jesus Christ suffered for our sake. It reminds us of love and greatness of God and his willingness to die for the sins of mankind. It teaches us to be a good human being and to be kind to everyone. We fast and pray silently to God to forgive us”.
The period of mourning will end Sunday when Christians across the globe will celebrate the day as Easter
Sunday marking the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
