Kalinganagar, March 10: In a shocking incident, a man in Jampasi village under the police limits in Jajpur district killed his wife with a sharp-edged weapon over suspected infidelity late Monday night.
The victim was identified as Sumitra Chatar wife of Sanatan Chatar (35). Sanatan tried to flee after the incident, but was caught by locals and handed over to police.
Police arrested Sanatan over a complaint filed by the victim’s mother and seized a knife used in the killing.
Later, Sanatan was produced in a court following registration of a case. The body was first sent to Danagadi hospital where the doctor on duty refused to do post-mortem following which it was resent to the district headquarters
hospital. The doctor’s refusal for
post-mortem triggered resentment among the fellow tribals.
Police said Sanatan of nearby Ramthengar village was married to Sumitra daughter of Turam Sinku in Jampasi village 12 years back in 2012. Sanatan after marriage shifted to his in-laws’ village and stayed there in a house with his wife.
The couple was soon blessed with two sons, but fissures appeared between them after Sanatan suspected his wife of having a relationship with a village youth. The incident occurred when Sumitra was fast asleep at home last night. Sanatan appeared before her and stabbed her neck with a knife. Family members woke up to her scream and found her lying dead in a pool of blood.
Kalinganagar IIC Jyoti Prakash Panda Tuesday conducted a spot inquiry
during which he found that the accused was married to three women out of which two, including Sumitra,
have died.
When contacted, additional superintendent of police (ASP) Pradipta Kumar Sahani refused to speak on the issue till the probe gets completed.
