‘Negligence’ claims lineman’s life

Kuanrmunda: Tension ran high at Biramitrapur after a lineman of Koladakhei area under Biramitrapur Municipality in Sundargarh district died Friday night. The deceased was identified as Mahendra Nayak (42).

According to information, Mahendra, on the direction of a junior engineer of Biramitrapur, was repairing a transformer near Jagannath Vatika at about 8.45 pm. While he was at work, the power was accidentally switched on. Mahendra was thrown onto the ground where he again came in contact with a live wire.

On being informed, some social workers rescued him in a serious condition and rushed him to Biramitrapur Community Health Centre. He was then referred to Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH) after his condition deteriorated.

On reaching the hospital, doctors there declared him brought dead.

As soon as the news of Mahendra’s death reached Biramitrapur, the locals held the electricity department responsible for his demise and demanded compensation to his family. “We will not allow post mortem till compensation is not given to the deceased’s family,” locals threatened.

While the tension was running high, repeated attempts to contact junior engineer, WESCO, Manoranjan Majhi, to get his reaction failed.
