Odisha players rule the roost

Bhubaneswar: Odisha players performed brilliantly as five of them emerged champions in seven categories of the TAB AITA-OTA Talent Series (TS7) tennis tournament, which concluded at the Kalinga Stadium here Friday.

In the U-16 boys’ category final top seed Pratyush Mohanty of the state defeated unseeded statemate Ashis Kumar Parida 6-1, 6-0 to clinch the title. In the girls’ U-16 final second seed Simran N Ekka stunned top seed Sanya Yadav of West Bengal 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to take top honours.

In the U-12 girls’ final top seed Sohini Sanjay Mohanty of Odisha defeated second seed Charlotte Liu of West Bengal 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 to emerge champion. However in the U-12 boys’ category, fourth seed Stevan Ankit Ekka of Odisha had to be satisfied with the runner-up prize after losing 3-6, 2-6 to top seed Arnav Mandal of West Bengal.

In the U-12 boys’ doubles final top seed Kaamlesh Rath of Odisha and his Assamese partner Ved Aditya Kalita thrashed the second-seeded West Bengal duo of Mayand Tewary and Vedaant Agarwal 6-2, 6-0 to win the crown.

In the U-16 girls’ doubles final the top seed duo of Simran from Odisha and her West Bengal partner Sanya defeated second seed Archita Sahoo of Orissa and Liu of West Bengal, 6-0, 6-2.

However in the U-16 boys’ doubles final top seed duo of Vighnesh Nanda from Orissa and Md Arib Afzal of West Bengal finished runners-up after losing 1-6, 1-6 to fourth seed West Bengal pair of Rounak Ghosh and Wyatt Obrien.
