Nayagarh: Unidentified miscreants attacked a college student in Parbatipur village under Fatehgarh police limits of Nayagarh district Wednesday for allegedly opposing illegal cannabis trade.
The victim has been identified as Laba Mohapatra. He is a Plus III final year student at Pathani Samanta College in Khandapara.
According to a police official, the young man had earlier noticed several men engaged in the illegal activity. This led him to oppose the peddlers. Besides, he had launched an awareness drive in the village in this context.
The attack on Laba took place while he was returning home alone late Wednesday night, said a source. The miscreants assaulted him with sharp weapons leaving him with critical injuries.
Some locals spotted him on the road in a critical condition. He was immediately rushed to Bhapur community health centre (CHC) and was later shifted to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar and then to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack after his health condition deteriorated.
On being informed, police reached the spot, registered a case and have started an investigation into the incident. The identity of the attacker is yet to be known.
