Teen slashed grandpa’s throat for Rs 2 lakh

Berhampur, May 19: Police Saturday claimed to have cracked the mysterious killing of an 85-year-old man, Arakhit Maharana here in Ganjam district and arrested his grandson Tarun Maharana (19) in this connection.

The youth killed his grandfather for Rs two lakh that he demanded from the octogenarian to buy an old car, police said.

Police have registered a murder case and produced accused Tarun in court. He was remanded in judicial custody after the court rejected his bail plea.

Berhampur additional SP Shantunu Das Saturday revealed the incident before media at a press meet held at Big Bazaar police station.

According to the case diary, someone had slashed Maharana’s throat April 30 night when he was asleep. Family members rushed him to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur in a critical condition. However, the elderly man succumbed to the injuries May 4 while undergoing treatment.

Since then, police were on the hunt for the accused. After repeated interrogation of all the family members, the investigating team zeroed in on Tarun after noticing changes in his behavour and deviation from his earlier statements.

Constant grilling finally forced the teen to give in and he confessed of killing his grandfather for money, Big Bazaar IIC Suresh Kumar Tripathy said.

According to police, Tarun wanted to buy a second hand car and demanded Rs 2 lakh from his grandfather. He was furious when Maharana refused him the amount. The youth lost cool over the issue and slit the throat of the elderly man while he was in sleep.
