New York, Sept 9: She had always dreamt about being the No.1 in women’s tennis, but when it finally happened here Thursday, German Angelique Kerber had to virtually pinch herself to realise the magnitude of her achievement. Kerber became the No. 1 the moment, Serena Williams lost her semifinal match to Karolina Pliskova.
“For me, it’s just amazing to be after Steffi the next No.1 player in Germany,” said Kerber, who at 28 will become the oldest player to reach top position. “Steffi is a great champion, she’s a great person. I think she’s proud of me to be the next one after her. To be now the No.1 in the world, that was always a dream for me. And it has finally happened,” she added.”
Kerber, who had all through been saying from the beginning of the US Open that the No. 1 position was not on her mind, however, admitted that she tried her best to keep the thought away, but it always came back to sort of ‘haunt’ her.
“I never wanted to put myself under any pressure. I just intended to go out there and perform and let the results do the talking,” stated the German. “But try as much as I could, the No.1 thought was always coming back, I simply could not push it away. Thankfully it’s now been done away with and now I can concentrate more on the job in hand now – winning the US Open title. It would great to get that title also,” added the Australian Open winner.
