Bhubaneswar: Police have arrested two men and their mother in connection with the illegal sale of country and foreign liquor in the City. They have also been accused of attacking a police patrol team under Chandaka Police Station limits here, officials said Monday.
The accused have been identified as Prakash Behera (34), Sridhar Behera (40) and their mother Kumari Behera (55), all residents of Simulipatana under Chandaka police limits.
Acting on reliable information about illegal liquor sale at a variety store near a licensed foreign liquor outlet in the area, a patrolling team conducted a surprise raid Sunday evening.
On seeing the police team, shop owner Sridhar allegedly tried to flee but was apprehended.
During the inspection of the shop, Prakash and his mother reached the spot and allegedly threatened the police personnel with dire consequences with a sword.
Police said the woman also instigated her sons and issued threats to the officers.
Subsequently, Prakash and Sridhar allegedly wielded two swords and launched a sudden attack on the police team.
However, the personnel managed to evade the assault and overpowered all three accused.
During the search, police seized two iron swords, 72 bottles of foreign liquor, 50 litres of illicit country liquor and a scooter from their possession.
Police said Prakash is a habitual offender with six previous criminal cases registered against him at Chandaka police station, while Sridhar has one case.
The accused were forwarded to the court, and further investigation into the matter is underway, police added.
