Banrapal: A youth lost his life as he was hit by a truck at the city square on National Highway-55 in Angul district Sunday. The deceased was Sankarsan Nayak, who worked as a village guard.
The incident occurred when Nayak walked up to the square to have tea. A truck hit him as the driver lost balance on the wheels, leading to his instant death, eyewitnesses said.
The incident caused tension in the area. Angry locals gathered at the spot and staged a road blockade. They placed the body on the NH and sat around it. The locals demanded construction of speed-breakers in the area and immediate grant of compensation to the bereaved family.
Vehicular movement came to a standstill for hours. Many vehicles were stranded on the NH. The protest continued until a police team reached the spot and pacified the protesters.
The agitators relented after the police promised necessary compensation. The body was sent for autopsy. A case has been registered and the vehicle driver detained for interrogation.
