Sambalpur: Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) is set to have a cancer care centre (CCC) on its campus with the Union government giving its green signal for it.
The center will be constructed at a cost of Rs 45 crore under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke.
The location for the proposed CCC has already been identified and the tender process is going to be initiated as soon as funds are released, according to sources.
The proposed five-storied CCC building will be constructed at a cost of Rs 13.50 crore and the rest of the amount will be spent on purchase of medical equipment, it was learnt.
The existing 24-bed cancer ward at VIMSAR is facing many problems due to lack of specialists and other human resources. It lacks even basic facilities like drinking water. The patients and their relatives have to run around to get the bare minimum treatment here.
The ward was used to be managed with the help of one associate professor for several years, although it was supposed to have four specialists including a professor, an associate professor, an assistant professor and a senior resident doctor. A senior resident doctor has been appointed recently.
