Bhubaneswar: The future of about 600 medical students and more than 1,000 nursing students is in the dark after the fire October 17 that claimed 21 lives.
The Khurda district administration had Wednesday issued a showcause notice to the hospital asking why action should not be taken against it, raising the possibility of the hospital being closed down. Such a closure would make it impossible for the 84 postgraduate students and 550 MBBS students of the medical college and the nearly 1,000 nursing students of the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital to complete their courses.
“Our future is at stake because of the carelessness of the hospital management. The management has no right to play with the future of the students,” said a nursing student on condition of anonymity.
“We come here to study and shape our future. We pay huge sums to the institute for this,” said the student.
Hospital staff are facing a similar situation. There are more than 1,500 people, from superintendent to sweeper, working in the hospital, said sources.
Doctors would get employment in some other place, but the paramedical staff, nurses, attendants, sweepers and others would find it difficult to get jobs, said an employee.
“My family and I are going to face problems because of the fault of the management,” said a lady receptionist.
