City gears up for Hockey World Cup

Bhubaneswar: A review meeting for the development works of the forthcoming Orissa Men’s Hockey World Cup, to be played November 28-December 16 at the Kalinga Stadium, took place Tuesday at the Secretariat here. Sixteen countries will participate in the mega event.

Chief executive of Hockey India (HI) Elena Norma, development commissioner R Balakrishnan and secretaries of sports, works, tourism, and handloom and textiles, set the timelines for completion of these works.

Chief secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi has directed that the construction of east, north and south galleries at the Stadium should be completed by May 31 while swimming pool and water filtration plants for both the pitches would be completed by March 31 and May 20 respectively.

Padhi has also directed the works department to complete construction and widening of internal roads, drain, food plaza and other works by the month of May.

IDCO has set up a dedicated engineering unit for expeditious execution of the infrastructural projects in the stadium, informed sports secretary Vishal Dev. 

Around 8,600 beds have been made available for online booking for the ensuing World Cup, while other inventories are being made. The land allottees of newly- coming up hotels in Bhubaneswar have been asked to complete the construction before the beginning of the World Cup and make it available for visitors and guests, Padhi said.

Notably, it was the third executive committee meeting of the event where Padhi took a project wise review of the progress and set timelines for completion of each one.

Issues relating to renovation of the Stadium for additional sitting facility, preparation of the accommodation and catering plans of the players and officials, travel and local transportation, traffic and security among other arrangements were discussed in the meeting.

Balakrishnan has also advised the concerned departments to align the programmes of cultural extravaganza and showcasing of Orissa handloom and textiles along with the event. It was further decided to tinge the cultural programmes with performing art of various states and countries.
