Balasore: Diarrhoea is spreading in Basta and Remuna blocks of Balasore district due to consumption of contaminated water.

Three fishermen died of waterborne diseases in Basta and around 25 people have been affected. The affected people are being treated at the District Headquarters Hospital, a report said.

It was found that fishermen of Bhabalpur area were affected by diarrhoea. 10 fishermen aboard a boat were hit by the disease. While returning ashore one of them, Chaitanya Singh, (26), died.

Thirteen fishermen who had come ashore in seven boats developed diarrhoea. Of them, Deben Hembram, (30), of Baripada and Chandrakant Majhi, (45), of Balasore died.

Additional District Public Health Officer Sandhyarani Pattnaik reached Bahabalpur and took stock of the situation. She also collected water samples from the boats.

Bikash Das, President of the local Fishermen’s Association, said the water loaded in boats was contaminated.

CDMO Dr Kamalakant Nayak said that diarrhoea had spread due to consumption of contaminated water and stale food. “Medical teams have been sent to villages and medicines are being distributed,” he added.
