Elephant kills one, villagers stage demo

Narasinghpur: A fifty four-year-old man was killed Sunday by a wild elephant at a village in this block. The deceased was Binod Barad of Khairipanga village under Badamba block.

As the news spread, people thronged the spot and, keeping the body by their side, protested against the forest department’s failure to check elephant attacks in the area. They sought compensation for the deceased’s family.

The irate villagers detained forest officials who visited the spot to take stock of the situation, for some time.

Locals said Binod and his two friends visited Taila village to pluck cashew early in the morning. They came across a jumbo that sneaked into the cashew garden. In their escape bid, two succeeded but Binod failed. The elephant lifted and threw him onto the ground, causing his death on the spot.
