Cuttack, Sept 21: The Barabati Stadium here regained its Test status Wednesday after a gap of 21 years as a decision to this effect was taken at the BCCI AGM in Mumbai.
“We can now host Test matches at the Barabati,” a visibly pleased OCA secretary Asirbad Behera, who attended the AGM in Mumbai, stated.
So far the Barbati Stadium has hosted 17 ODIs, two Tests and one T20 international match.
Few games of the Women’s World Cup in 2013 have also been played at the stadium. The first Test at the venue was played in 1987 between India and Sri Lanka and the second game was also between the two same countries in 1995.
According to sources, BCCI president Anurag Thakur played a major role in helping Barabati regain its Test status again. “Barabati Stadium has all the facilities to host a Test match. We had been demanding to regain this status for a long time. It has been fulfilled and is a great news for all the cricket fans of the state,” stated Behera.
