Admin apathy: Major projects of Bhadrak dist stuck in limbo

Bhadrak: A number of important projects in Bhadrak district have failed to make much headway due to alleged administrative apathy.

Work on a food and textiles park, a new building for the district headquarters hospital, development of a district-level stadium and an indoor stadium is going at a snail’s pace.

Though the administration has conducted several review meetings, work on these projects is not being expedited, it is alleged.

Except the Dhamra port, no other major project has been executed in the district.

Besides, the people have several other demands like an agriculture university, unitary university status to Bhadrak Autonomous College and a nursing school, but no attention has been paid to these demands as yet.

There is a proposal to set up a food and textiles park at Dhamnagar Chhak under Bhandaripokhari block, but the project has remained a nonstarter due to hurdles in land acquisition.

A private company had acquired over 217 acres of land to set up a sugar plant at Dhamnagar Chhak in 1995. About 23 years have passed, but the project has not yet been set up. Later, a decision was taken at the government level to set up a food and textiles park in the area.

But the people who had spared their land for the sugar plant in Pahimpur, Manjurigadia and Helpur strongly opposed the latest project.

Similarly, the ambitious project to develop the district-level stadium is stuck in limbo. An alternative site for the stadium has not been identified.

The district headquarters hospital will be shifted to Shyampur and site selection process has started. But nothing has moved beyond this.

Besides, there is a proposal to shift the Bhadrak sub-jail to Amargadia due to overcrowding problem. Efforts are being made for the last seven years to shift the sub-jail which requires 21 acres and 94 decimal of land.

Collector Rajendra Kumar Panda said efforts are being made to execute these projects.    PNN
